Arctic Monkeys - Suck It And See
Can I count the ways I love thee? Nay. My favorite Arctic Monkeys album to date, Suck It And See embodies everything I love about indie rock. (Can we call it indie anymore? They’re huge. Ah, who cares.) Rock and roll styles scaling back into a 60’s - 80’s blend, incredibly eloquent lyrics, and artistic simplicity in the instrumentals.
Lyrically, Alex Turner is my idol. He has the ability to say so much about so many things in so few words, and blends it with the rest of the band carefully to add even deeper meaning. A sample of my favorite lyrics from the album come from Love Is A Laserquest:
Do you still feel younger than you thought you would by now
Or darling have you started feeling old yet
Don’t worry I’m sure that you’re still breaking hearts
With the efficiency that only youth can harnessAnd do you still think love is a laserquest
Or do you take it all more seriously
I’ve tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I’ve had
But you’re always busy being make-believeAnd do you look into the mirror to remind yourself you’re there
Or has somebody’s goodnight kisses got that covered
When I’m not being honest
I pretend that you were just some loverTransitioning from the lovesick songs to the album ending track That’s Where You’re Wrong couldn’t be smoother, and the record certainly finishes not with a fizzle, but with a bang.
Possibly my favorite album of 2011, this one is a must-listen.

Thursday’s Band Spam Lineup. Message me to request tomorrow’s bands.

Be whoever you have to be, I won’t judge you
Sing whatever you have to sing to get it out and not become a recluse about how to come out
I know you never meant to but you do
oh but you do
